Stilla: Till stilla falla

14/02/13  ||  sincan

It feels like ages since I last wrote about some Swedish terrific black metal so I guess it’s time to enlighten you with some new things coming up during this spring. Stilla is a band consisting of members from other more or less famous Swedish bands, you can do your research yourself, so the debut is not a typical diamond in the rough, rather a timeless shining one already.

Their style is genuine in a most interesting way, this since what they do is not new but still doesn’t sound like a cheap rip off or anything. This might seem a bit contradictory but they manage to stand out as a addition to the genre. Their music is filled with forest romanticism, harsh typical black metal and some clean vocals as well. I can’t write this review without mentioning the band Skogen because they are pretty similar in some ways, still two different bands with their own thing going on independent of each other. While Skogen might be very similar in terms of buzzwords they are more like straight forward and making their music into a singularity while Stilla’s things might float out a bit more, I’m associating Stilla, more than Skogen, with a camp fire and the smell of smoke. Pretty fucking clear, right?

The music speed ranges from pretty slow to pretty fast, where all instruments get their share of the production and I really like how the bass sneaks upon you from time to time, how the guitar is riffing in the true Nordic manner and the clean vocals being wisely and sparely included. The atmosphere is also something strong with this record, much thanks to the production and songwriting, where some parts get a clearer sound while in the faster and more chaotic parts everything gets more messy. Everything is in order!

In the track “Hinsides dagen” we are also offered some piece of slightly psychedelic jazz metal, and all those small, yet special, different elements shows up here and there making the album more interesting for every listen one takes. So do you and your friends a favor. Grab some beers, some hot dogs, a portable music device and walk into the forest and perform a typical forest drunken celebration of less commercialism and more intrinsic genuine values.
